Cable Car Ducts Revealed in Leith Walk

The Granton railway tunnel unearthed during tram works in Edinburgh during early 2021 and reported in the previous post also revealed another interesting feature as in the above image. These channels are thought to have carried the cables for the cable tramway that ran from about 1888 to 1923 when it was replaced with electric trams

“Your photo of the tram works showing the railway arches has provoked some discussion with some of my tram/bus friends. If you look at the side nearest the red and white bollards, you will see a groove, almost like a trench. This is probably the remains of the cable tunnel which was used by the cable cars. The power station was at Shrubhill and the conduits ran from there over various routes.”
